Kingston, Toronto, Brampton

Back in October, my super cool and amazing husband presented at a conference in Kingston, Ontario. His topic was: The Security Implications of Chinese Investment in Arctic Energy. He has explained what this means and how a masters in this will get him a job but I continue to draw a blank.
I was able to get a few days off work so I accompanied Tim to Ontario. Canada Toronto West  is where Tim served a mission for the LDS church. I was very excited to see Tim present and then enjoy the sights of Toronto and his old mission.
The conference was held in Kingston at the Royal Military College. The grounds of college are beautiful and have a lot of history.
I actually thought all of Kingston was quite beautiful and neat because it was full of old buildings and history. Kingston was going to be the capital of Canada but people felt that it wouldn't be safe because it was too close to USA.
Tim emailed the conference and managed to have me included! I died laughing when I read my name tag.
Tim started getting sick on the second day that we were there so I ended up wandering Kingston by myself and found some super delicious places to eat. I got to know the other CMSS students who came with us and ended up ditching Tim every night to hang out with them.

Every day spent in Ontario resulted in a sicker and sicker Tim. He powered through his "man cold" and delivered an amazing presentation. It generated a lot of interest and a lot of good questions. I was so proud. It was really neat to see what he has been working so hard on and has so much fun studying.

UofC had some serious representation on this panel. From left to right is Tim Choi (PhD student), Andrei Shagalov (1st year masters student), Tim Wright (2nd year masters student).
After the conference we went back to Toronto and hit up a Maple Leafs game. It was seriously so awesome and the fans in Toronto are intense.
We felt extremely Canadian because we were also drinking Tim Horton's hot chocolate during the game.

I tried so hard to be a supportive wife but Tim was not getting over his "man cold" and I was going crazy in the hotel with the lights off and quietly watching TV (with not PVR) while he slept. I went to a full 3 hours of church. The Brampton ward is lovely and I even made a connection to Welling. The church keeps you connected everywhere you go.
Tim briefly left the hotel to go walk around the ground of the temple. We weren't able to do a session because the temple was closed for cleaning.

The next day I ventured in to Toronto by myself. Tim was nervous that I would crash the rental car so I took the go train and bus. I was sooooo proud of myself for getting there and back with no problems. (I definitely asked a lot of people for instructions.)

Definitely went to the top. It was pretty neat. In 1995, the CN tower was classified as on of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.
The glass floor was super cool!
After going up the CN tower, I wasn't ready to go back to the hotel so I went into Ripley's Aquarium. It was also a super fabulous sight.
No big deal but that is a shark.

When I arrived back at the hotel I found Tim feeling worse than ever. We had been pumping full of all kinds of cough and cold medications with no change to his fever so we decided to go to the emergency room. (I sure do love Canadian health care) Turns out his temperature was 39.9 C!!! Ooops! For a health care worker, I sure nailed that one. They took him in immediately and started him on IV antibiotics. After reviewing his medical history and realizing that he had been in China, we had a scare of Typhoid Fever!! In the end we think it was just a bad sinus infection. After the antibiotics were completed, Tim's fever subsided and he was starting to feel much better. We went back to the hotel where he tried to enjoy a hot shower that turned cold half way through. I called the front desk to inform them of our problem but reassured me that hot water came complimentary… gah! never stay at a super cheap comfort inn!
Tim felt much better, just in time to fly out. Oh well, looks like I will just have to plan another mini vacation!
